Perfect Experiment Conditions include:

1) Slow pull

Magnet is being pulled slowly off the surface.

Pulling the magnet quickly off the surface will reduce the recorded pull force.

2) Vertical pull

Magnet is being pulled perpendicularly off the surface.

Pulling the magnet at an angle will reduce the pull force.

3) Flat Material Surface

Magnet is pulled off a smooth flat surface with entire area of magnet in contact with the surface.

If surface is not flat, (e.g. rounded surface, rough, etc), pull force will be reduced. Entire surface of the pot magnet must be in contact with the flat surface. Less area of contact will substantially decrease the pull force.

4) Material and Thickness

Magnet is pulled off a 1 inch thick steel plate.

A less magnetic material will reduce pull force. Similarly the thickness of the material will also affect pull force. The thinner the object, the lower the pull force.

5) Additional External Conditions include temperature - within operating temperature of magnet, etc.

Scenario example: D36 has a pull force of 35kg under the above perfect conditions. However D36 is unable to even lift a 10kg dumbbell. Possible reasons: Surface of dumbbell is not flat but curved. During the lifting, the dumbbell is moving / swaying from side to side (i.e. Contact area is no longer full and no longer vertical pull), the dumbbell is coated with a rubber surface (i.e. material is not in full contact with metal, separated by thin layer of rubber).
